Topshop vs Anorexia critics vs Codie Young

We were compelled to have a say about this controversy towards an article striking down supermodel Codie Young on the Washington post. Basically, there were tasteless remarks from Anorexia professionals towards the new face of Topshop (Codie) in this photo below:

(image from Topshop website)

It was mentioned that because of the lack of expression in this photo, there is a clear indication of undereating. NOW hold up! How can a blank face indicate undereating? A model can portray anything through her face, may it be happy or fierce. It's part of the job. How can these campaigners use the "lack of expression" as a basis for undereating? This just sounds downright absurd and lacks concrete facts to support their statement.

Karen Easthall also mentioned that she looks ill and "I dread to think how she looks under her clothes.” This just sounds horrible! Codie's been booked by top designers all over Europe and USA which shows that fashion (which has a lot to do with clothes!) is certainly her forte. Karen Easthall went over the line of being judgmental and tactless towards another human being.

Models are obviously hired for their hanger looking physique. I'm certain that people who are not even in the industry would be fully aware of this. I mean let's get real. If models weren't hired for being skinny then there wouldn't be an occupation of such. There is a possibility that Codie is just naturally skinny and she should not be criticised for it.

Kawa - Hang over cure!

On the day of Luke's 21st (see our previous feature about him if you have no idea who he is) we were so hung over that all we wanted to do is just soak in the morning sun rays and be lazy.

Fortunately, our hotel was located in Oxford Street and Crown Street's just a few hops away. Personally, I like having tea when I'm hung over. Yes, it could dehydrate you more but I don't care because it wakes me up. So we all went to Kawa Cafe and had a quick breakfast.

I must admit that I am the biggest pain when it comes to ordering tea. I ordered their Moroccan Mint Tea and asked if they could add skim milk, brown sugar and vanilla syrup on the side just to satisfy my sweet tooth. We're not professional restaurant/cafe critics but it did take a good half an hour before it made it to our table. They must have been picking the tea leaves from their backyard or have completely forgotten about our order after asking 3 different waiters for it.

Carmelo had his usual - toast with peanut butter and strawberry jam on the side sooo Andy Warhol plus chocolate milkshake. Luke and I had sourdough toast with mushroom and feta. It was amazing! We were so hungry that we forgot to take snaps of it!!! But we recommend it :)

We like going to Kawa because of their ambiance and the music they play. You'd hear tunes from Interpol, Nirvana, Friendly Fires, Lady Hawk etc. They also have interesting statues hanging on their walls, nice furniture and paintings.

It's always a good start in the morning whenever we visit Kawa so if you haven't been there, you must! It's been there for years too :)

Friendly Fires x Chairlift x Lykke Li x Muse

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnHJhy68Q98&w=425&h=349]

During Luke's birthday weekend we were reminded of our song for all seasons! As innnnnnnnnn! I cannot help but jump or at least bounce with the beat when this song plays! Even if it is inside a Surry Hills boutique.

Personally, the Friendly Fires have been absent from my "monthly playlists" for a while now but not anymore! Loaded old favorites today "Jump In the Pool", "Kiss of Life", "Photobooth" & "Skeleton Boy".

Finally, tonight I am probably just being lazy but I don't "feel" like checking out the new stuff they may have. I know it would be good but all the songs I mentioned above have so much life and moments to them; sacred almost if I may. Talking about "sacred", here are songs I managed to dig out of the grave as well! ! ! Enjoy ...

I call this Lykke Li's "Asian Song"- the poor quality from this video if heard from afar makes it sound like a Chinese song! :P Loveee it!

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqJDnhh-OKM&w=425&h=349]

Take note of the lyrics: "...where they Heimlich Maneuvered me and then show me how to make a baby" !!! Char I say; CHAR!

... and then finally (this post is too long now) the song I was obsessed with for at least 2 months. Back when I was still yours truly, the only Asian Starbucks barista in the Gold Coast, I would insist on having this song played at least 3 times during the shifts I managed! Then they played it on FM Radio and your everyday emo kid would play it on his phone at the back of the bus as well which totally sucked!

Haters: They Love Us

image

Merille & I are twins- everyone knows. It becomes more fascinating when the things we go through during the day are somewhat similar as well!

Today we made a good fight to be the best at what we do! Merille in the fashion world and myself in the corporate arena. Haters strike us but our best weapon is our tolerance towards them and furnished skills in ignoring them in the most provocative way, they will not be sleeping tonight! There's this poisonous stare we give. You wouldn't know unless we abhor you.

Why bother meddle with the insecurities of others? We have far more major woes to bare: Like the photo above, I have to keep her look prim & she keeps my hair in place! :p

Feature: Ms Karen La Parva

Name: Karen La Parva

Karen firmly believes that life begins at the end of your comfort zone and we definitely agree! As a very dear and awesome friend of ours a feature was already in the plan even before this blog came live. We e-mailed away a couple of questions all the way to Geneva in the U.N. Headquarters where she is based and got back answers that make up a good read!

1.What is the last book you read?

Last book I read is called 'Death in a Prison'. It is about a prison ward/executor telling the story about his work that involves regularly making decisions on whether a person is to be executed or not. I rented it from the library.

2.If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be?

I think I would be a fruit, a mango probably. Living in the sun, good taste, and good color.

3.If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. with whom would it be?

If I could trade places with any person, I would choose Hitler. Just to clarify, I don’t glorify what he has done, but I would love to understand the mindset of someone like him, being capable of what he has done. Sorry I’m a bit dark and twisted!

4.As if you were 'tweeting', in 120 words please tell us about yourself.

I was born in Germany but was told that my soul is Australian. I have lived in 5 different countries and love traveling and working out; I actually enjoy running half marathons and have the green belt in Karate. At age 14 I was going to be a ballet dancer but my parents had other plans for me. I tend to get married in bars, skinny dip in random pools, and steal $20 from people when drunk. I turned from pop to rock to Indie (and pretend that I can play the guitar now). I think relationships are for people over 40. Sometimes people tell me I am funny, crazy, and dark and twisted. I love old cars and especially the old mini because it could potentially fit it in my room . I don’t like coffee but drink 4 a day and I think comic characters are hot.

Merille and I met Karen believe it or not only in around March last year through another awesome friend! Our bond in BOND (university) was not long enough (so far anyway) but that has not hindered us from the strong friendship that up until now keeps on! Life after Bond and parting was hard but we have worked ways around it. While Merille and I are keeping up with life here in Sydney, our dear Karen is in Geneva exchanging "Hi's" and "Hello's" with dignitaries from all over the world! We are and will always be proud of you Kaz / Strawberry ! ! !

A bit late for a reaction . . .

Dear Devendra,

Ewww or ewww? WHY?! Your peculiarity was cool but this took it to another level too much to handle! It reminds me of a movie that Froggy and I found intense, disturbing and interesting- Mysterious Skins but somehow makes it to one of my favourites (not sure about the other Frog ;P).

I never imagined anything else in mass multimedia that could take it to another level but Devendra has proven us wrong! What do you think, too much, no? Or am I just so demure and have not seen enough? :P
